COMMON SCENTS: Palo Santo (Holy Wood)

April 22nd, 2009

Young Living oils produced in Ecuador grow in some of the richest soil on the planet. The oils extracted from many of  these plants are unique in that they have constituents and compounds that are usually found separately in different  individual plants. These multiple compounds all are found in one Ecuador oil! Chemical  tests for  purity and chemical constituents have never produced complexities and abilities like these elsewhere. Multiple compounds all in one oil baffle SUPER BUGS (MRSA, bacteria and viruses because they cannot”grasp” the molecular structure. Rather than getting stronger the microbes die off.

Palo Santo (Bursara Graveolens) meaning Holy Wood is a very special sacred oil of the region. Unlike any other oil it is
extracted from the dead wood of the tree. The longer it ages on the ground the more oil it produces. Gary Young experimented extensively to find the best age to extract oil.

The tree grows fairly quickly (15-20 ft. in two years) Reforestation of these trees is being done on land Gary Young purchased. There are two species of Palo Santo trees in Ecuador. In northern Ecuador trees have a white bark with a large, heavy trunk. Southern Ecuador’s have a red bark tree that produce double the oil of the white variety with a 62%-68% limonene content. (a cancer reducing compound) Studies in Japan produced a 70% success rate in reducing cancer.

Palo Santo is known as spiritual oil, traditionally used by the Incas to purify and cleanse the spirit from negative energies.

I am featuring Palo Santo today because of its wide variety of uses. In the area of pain management, panaway is good for bone pain and inflammation. Relieve it works for muscle pain. But when nothing else works or I don’t have time to analyze a symptom Palo Santo will usually work within seconds. As people say” It stinks but it works.” A friend of mine was given a bottle to try. One whiff and she put it aside, but when she had nothing else for pain that’s the oil that did the trick. Now she uses it for her pilaties students  regularly especially for tight neck and shoulder muscles.

Similar to Frankincense for it’s many uses it has been used for depression, cancer and pain. The oil is anti-tumoral, antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal due to its complex chemistry.

A few testimonials:

“Nathan brought back Palo Santo from his trip to Ecuador. He did a Raindrop with Palo Santo on a man who had been in a wheelchair for over a year. After the session he got out of his wheelchair – on the spot!”

“Emily’s son was kicked in the face by a horse. He had severe damage to his face and jaws. His jaws were wired together. After rubbing Palo Santo on his jaws 3 to 6 times a day combined with Frankincense the wires were removed in three weeks instead of three months as the doctors predicted – with no infection under his plate.”

Methods of use:

Topically  apply 1-2 drops on location
For aromatic use, inhale directly as needed or diffuse/humidify for 10-15 minutes daily.

Try Palo Santo when nothing else seems to work and experience results!

COMMON SCENTS: Helichrysum

March 18th, 2009

Helichrysum- also known as Everlasting Oil, Immortale and Straw Flower is one of the most important oils to use. It resonates with the Circulatory System, working on the blood in so many ways.

Helichrysum is expensive because it is uniquely delicate to distill, yet when distilled properly has magnificent effects. Remember it is used in several Young Living blends (listed at the end of this article) so consider always having one of them available.

Distilled from a bright yellow flower that can grow up to 22 inches tall, Helichrysum keeps its shape and bright yellow tint even when dried.

The chemical constituents in Helichrysum vary from region to region. Gary Young uses Italian Helichrysum because of the unique chemical compounds in the flower from that part of the world. The distillation process must be exact–too high a temperature may dissipate one of the rare active ingredients, di-ketones. The difficulty is that it can smell the same to the layperson. Only a professional nose like Gary Young would be able to pick out the difference. Last year he declared an entire batch of Helichrysum unacceptable and refused to ship it, causing the company to be without it for some time.

The best and most dramatic story I heard was when his son Jacob fell and was bleeding profusely. Gary dumped an entire bottle of Helichrysum in the wound and stopped the bleeding because of this oil’s blood regulating properties.

I used a blend with Helichrysum for its ability to stimulate new cell replacement, to literally regenerate skin tissue.

The unique benefits of the chemistry of this oil are that it moves the Chi and the blood. It treats the accumulated, clotted blood of severe bruising. Its anti inflammatory properties can affect the veins in cases of thrombophlebitis.

It is an anti-spasmodic, similar to Roman Chamomile and Yarrow, therefore useful treating migraines, muscular aches, pain, neuralgia and irritable bowel. It moves bile to provide liver support by removing heavy metals from the bloodstream, therefore cleansing the blood.

Helichrysum encourages lymph movement and drainage. It is of benefit for coughs, asthma, bronchitis, colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

It may help with gallbladder infection and can be used homeopathically (in tincture form from the plant), for gall bladder disorders and lumbago.

Because of its ability to clear toxins from the liver and move Chi, it can cut through deep, stuck anger and negativity that causes resentment.

Helichrysum is found in the following blends for a variety of benefits:

Emotional–Trauma Life, Forgiveness, Live with Passion and Awaken.

For the mind emotionally and physically–Brain Power

For antispasmodic properties–M-Grain.

For muscles, arthritis, pain and inflammation—Panaway and Deep Relief Roll-On

For the liver–JuvaFlex and JuvaCleanse

For blood circulation and regeneration–Aroma Life and Chelex, a tincture to detoxify the blood.

Apply topically. Less Is More. A chiropractor friend once used it way too liberally and the next day went into a healing crisis. Too much over stimulated his lymph and detoxified his blood of heavy metals and toxins too rapidly. Less oil over time would have been much less uncomfortable—a drop or two on an area of concern, temple, forehead, back of neck or outside of ear. It may be directly inhaled or ingested.
